Weld County Youth Conservation Corps
(WCYCC) AmeriCorps
The AmeriCorps National Service Program is designed to give young people
the chance to serve their country and community while earning money for
college. A term of service commitment is six months, 900 service hours,
and in return for that service a $2,362 educational award will be earned.
WCYCC works in Weld County communities focusing on conservation/restoration
and community service. The AmeriCorps work crew consists of twelve corps
members ages 17 to 24 and one staff crew leader.
In addition to completing service projects which directly assist communities
in areas of identified need, WCYCC operates as a vehicle to develop job
and communication skills and service and work ethic in the Corps members.
To accomplish both the service projects for the community, and to develop
tangible job and life skills in the members, WCYCC relies on a team effort
developed over the years by WCYCC and other youth corps models. Studies
conducted by ABT Associates show that youth corps have a significant impact
on both communities and youth. The study shows that youth corps:
- Yield $1.04 in monetary benefit above the cost for each hour of
service members perform
- Produce over $13.24 worth of services per program hour (Based upon
information from the City of Greeley, WCYCC saved the city in excess
of $250,000 in 1998).
- Provide corps members with increased earning potential over that
of comparable youth
- Members are less likely to be arrested
The Weld County Youth Conservation Corps (AmeriCorps) is actively recruiting
for new members. We are looking for motivated candidates between the
ages of 17-24. The following are points to consider when applying for
AmeriCorps:
- AmeriCorps program is a six month commitment, equaling 900 hours
- AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend of $938 a month.
- AmeriCorps members earn an educational award at the completion of
their commitment equaling $2,362.
- The AmeriCorps educational award can not be converted to cash. It
is for use of education at an accredited
post secondary institution of higher education, it may include tuition,
books, supplies, student loan repayment, etc.
